The Environment. The environment may be the one cause that everyone agrees “touches” them. We all want to breathe air, and would rather not be poisoned by it.  We all want healthful food grown in nutrient rich soil, and would rather not by sickened by it.  It would be great if the water that we drank and swam in were abundant and free from harmful pollutants.  We’re all environmentalists, whether we know it or not.  Sure “environmentalists” are often thought of as folks in flannel, fonder of owls than showers. So, maybe it's a definition problem.

Let's change the definition, and broaden the responsibility. Here's our suggestion for a new definition:

An environmentalist is anyone who lives in an environment and is therefore responsible for the health and welfare of that environment.

Needless to say, there are a lot of great environmental stories out there – stories that will inspire and inform, and maybe help others follow suit.  We’ll bring you those stories – from corporations making small changes for big impact to great organizations and inspiring individuals.

An Investment
That will Keep You Green

Most conservationists agree that the greatest threat to our private forests is commercial development or the conversion to more intensive uses. Most people do not realize the most vulnerable forest lands are privately owned and that one million acres per year of these forests are being converted to parking lots, subdivisions, and other forms of development. Furthermore, two million acres of private forest land per year are being fragmented – broken into parcels of 100 acres or less – leading to permanent loss of forest land and the degradation of our ecosystems. What if you could make a long-term profitable investment in commercial timberland that would eventually put millions of acres into permanent conservation? In our humble opinion, this is a very cool investment model. We didn't know whether to cover it as an Environment story or in Do Good, Do Well story, it's that big. Learn what you can do at www.forestlegacy.com.

The Conservation Alliance:

Can Patagonia, REI, Kelty and The North Face Save The Environment They Play In (and depend on)?
Founded in 1989, The Conservation Alliance is a 100% virtual organization, with 66 member companies using their existing infrastructure to run the Alliance. This allows The Alliance to give 100% of its income to the causes it supports.  Check them out at www.conservationalliance.com - and be sure to support these fine companies that support our environment.

Local Restoration.  Global Leadership.

EarthCorps is based in Seattle, Washington. Work consists of volunteer-based and contracted restoration projects on public lands in the Puget Sound and Cascade mountains. EarthCorps alumni volunteer on environmental restoration projects around the world, for example building and maintaining the Great Baikal Trail in Siberia. Two-thirds of EarthCorps’ program participants come from the United States, one-third come from partner organizations from six different continents. Check them out at www.earthcorps.org
